Q and A with paranormal author Clarissa Johal

Today we have another guest for you. A fellow paranormal author, Clarissa Johal stopped by to chat with us about her new novel, BETWEEN. Welcome, Clarissa. Hi, Clarissa! Thanks for being with us, today. Why don’t you tell my readers a little about yourself and your work? How did you first become acquainted with the paranormal genre?

Clarissa Johal: I’ve worked as a veterinary assistant, zoo-keeper aide and vegetarian chef but I’ve always written. In high school, I wrote a one-act horror play that won first place in the Alberta High School Drama Festival. In college, I had two short stories, PIGEONS and THE ROPE, published in the literary magazine, Susurrus. In university, my non-fiction piece, A WAY OF LIFE, was published in the Sacramento Bee newspaper. It never occurred to me I could make a career at it until after the birth of my first child. While she nursed or slept in my lap, I wrote. It took me a year to write the first draft of my fantasy PRADEE and another ten years to complete it (raising a family, you know!). Once both my girls were in school, I threw myself 100% into my writing. As far as the paranormal genre, I’ve always been interested in the paranormal. I was raised in a very non-believer household, my mom is an atheist and my father was an agnostic. But all throughout my life, I’ve had personal experiences that I couldn’t explain.  In university, I took courses in cultural anthropology, mythology and religion and found them fascinating. When it comes down to it—we’re a product of not only our upbringing, but our personal experiences. And oftentimes, those experiences are in direct opposition with our upbringing or what society accepts. In BETWEEN, Lucinda says, “I know what I see. I don’t know what I believe,” which pretty much sums it up. What was the inspiration for BETWEEN? Clarissa: I was working on the second installment to my fantasy series when I was hit by two characters that didn’t belong and could not get them out of my head. I ended up setting the series aside and started writing BETWEEN, a story of the supernatural. I had the first draft written in a month, my edits finished a year later, and Musa Publishing accepted it three months after that. I’ve been pulled into the Otherworld permanently now. I love writing paranormal–the ideas come faster than I can get them down. Now that your novel’s published, do you have any advice for those just starting out? Clarissa: Network and find a writer’s group to not only supports your writing, but helps you promote it once it’s published. We’re all in this together and an internet presence is key.  And write!! Even on the days that you feel your writing is crap. Do it. You can always go back and delete or rewrite later. That’s true. If you weren’t a writer, what career might you have pursued instead? Clarissa: I worked as a veterinary and zoo-keepers assistant all throughout college and university. I love the field and would probably go back into it. Really? Wow! That’s neat. 🙂 What can curious fans expect from you next? Clarissa: I’m working on my next novel titled, STRUCK. It’s a supernatural horror and came to me as a single character and scene that kept replaying in my head over and over. I built on it from there and it should be done by March. The characters are very quirky but the premise is a bit darker than BETWEEN. I see you’ve written a Young Adult fantasy too, Pradee. How did that come about? Clarissa: I wrote a short story in a mythology class that my fellow students seemed to like. After the birth of my first child, I pulled it out and started building on the world I created. The four-book series is planned out in my head and I have the second book started, but I’ve been pulled into the Otherworld for now. We’ll see where that leads me. Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? Would you like to share anything more about your work? Clarissa: If you leave a comment, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a free ecopy of BETWEEN in the format of your choice (Kindle, NOOK, PDF or Mobi).  You can leave a comment on your own paranormal experiences, a response to my post, or just a “hello” and your contact info. The contest begins that day this goes live and we’ll pick the winner on Wednesday. The winner will be picked using Random.org and will be notified by email. (Giveaway is now closed) Now for a fun question: if you could face and vanquish any literary (or movie) villain, who would it be? Clarissa: Now why would I want to do that? I love literary villains! They’re the best part of the story. *grin* Hehe. Oh, that’s true. Sometimes they are! Thanks for being with us today, Clarissa. Before you go, would you care to share anything else? Perhaps a taste of your work? Betweencovercopy BETWEEN by Clarissa Johal Tagline: How far would you go to redeem yourself? Blurb: As a young girl, Lucinda was able to see spirits, a gift that didn’t come without its problems. Now, a dedicated young veterinarian, she is committed to the idea that every life can be saved. After a devastating accident, Lucinda tries to escape her past by moving to a small town. There, she meets a newcomer and feels an immediate connection with him. But there is another mysterious stranger to the small town, one that stirs within her a mixture of unease and desire. As Lucinda is drawn into a bitter tug-a-war from the forces around her, she is likewise pulled into a dangerous twist of past and present events. Forced to make difficult choices, she finds that the two men are locked in not only a battle for her life…but a battle for their salvation. Excerpt: A young woman stood beside the bed, anguish on her face. She looked vaguely familiar, though Lucinda couldn’t place her. The forgotten colors of her blousy dress had faded into indistinct shades of grey. The woman grasped Lucinda’s hand and pressed a key into it. Lucinda felt the jagged, metal edges pricking her skin. Somewhere in the distance, a car engine roared to life. The woman’s lips moved but the growling engine drowned out all other sound. The sound became louder. Growling. Darwin was growling. “Darwin?” Lucinda woke with a start. The shepherd growled again and hopped off the bed, padding into the living room. A quiet knock sounded from the front door. Lucinda rolled out of bed to answer it. Pushing Darwin aside to open the door, she peered sleepily into the moonlit night. A breeze blew across the clearing, stirring the grass. Confused, she shut the door before the breeze could make its way inside. “Come on back to bed, Darwin. Nobody there.” As she pulled the blanket up to her chin, the knocking started again. Lucinda slipped out of bed and walked back into the living room. The sound clearly came from the other side of the door, faint but unmistakable. She slid her hand quietly over the knob. At once, the knocking stopped. Turning the knob slowly, she pulled the door open a crack, heart pounding in her chest. “Hello?” An icy breeze slipped by her thigh as the scent of ozone assailed her senses. Her heart beat erratically. “Darwin, no!” The dog tried to push past her, growling once more. Rattled, Lucinda closed the door with a bang and locked it. Lucinda lay in bed and shivered, unable to get warm. A chill slipped under her covers, stealing up her spine. The smell of roses clung to her blanket, the warmth from their scent seemed to be at war with the cold. An hour passed and she finally dropped off to sleep. For the remainder of the night, the two unseen presences in her room remained at an impasse. Holidays

I’ve not gone missing…I’m thawing…or freezing depending on the day. 😉 And Christmas, well, had to go see the family…it’s a bit of a downer since we’ve lost some members recently but we do love to get together. While trying not to think too much on the downer stuff,  I’ve been enjoying the Venture Brothers. I don’t know if any of you have seen that but it is hilarious!

The bizarre animated escapades of pseudo-heroic scientist Dr. Rusty Venture, his competent, high strung bodyguard, and his two over-enthusiastic sons.

(#goteamventure

hehe)

Solstice was fun, if cold. I got a new drum. Ya!!! Isn’t it pretty?S/W Ver: 97.04.30RI’ve never been a drummer before, but I do love the monthly drumming circles.

For Christmas I was working very diligently on something writing-like–and except for the cookies I made didn’t get it done on time. Hope to have it done  to release soon. It’s formatting currently.

In the meantime, did you see I was interviewed in Eternal Haunted Summer this week? It’s up here if you’d like to see. I also have a new story there as well as do some other very talented authors and poets. Do check the new issue out if you have a chance. Happy Holidays, everyone!

Winter and Promo

Wow! I just stepped outside and it’s warmish today. Winter in Florida, eh? Don’t worry. We shall be paying for it come January! *laughs*

Q and A with Fantasy author Geoff Wakeling

I have a treat for my readers today, an indie author I just ran across, Geoff Wakeling, has agreed to be put in the hot seat! Do read on and let’s give Geoff a warm welcome on this cold day.

Why don’t you tell my readers a little about yourself and your work, Geoff? How did you first become acquainted with the fantasy genre?

Author Geoff Wakeling
author Geoff Wakeling

Geoff Wakeling: I’ve always been acquainted with the fantasy genre, and even as a child I was crazy about films and books that transported you into another realm…..I suppose I’ve never really grown up. I loved ‘The Never Ending Story’, Colin Dan’s ‘Animals of Farthing Wood’ books and ‘The Hobbit’, and was always upset when the book or movie ended. I’m a complete dreamer and hate to conform to society, and so have never managed to stay in an office job or anything similar for very long. I get too bored, and I’m off in my own head writing tales to amuse myself throughout the day.

Now I work from home as a copywriter and author. I also have a little gardening business, so life is pretty nice – gardening in the mornings, and then heading home for lunch and writing. It might not be the best existence for some, but it suits me just fine!

What was the inspiration for Inside Evil?

Geoff: Do you know? I really can’t remember. Even though I only started my publishing journey this year, Inside Evil has been hidden away in my computer files for at least half a decade – it needed some serious dusting off before it hit Amazon. Most probably I just sat down and started to write, saw what was coming onto the page and decided to continue. I find inspiration from everything, from a creature or plant I might see when gardening, to a conversation I overhear in the supermarket or a scene that I watch in a film. It all formulates in my head somehow, and out onto the page it comes.

I can understand that. You’ve got a new title out now. Tower of Souls is your second Indie published work. Do you have any advice for those just starting Tower of souls by Geoff Wakelingout?

Geoff: Really the best advice is to write and not have high expectations. I read an article with Amanda Hocking, published Inside Evil and then waited to make my fortune. It didn’t happen, the industry is not like that and you have to be very fortunate to get that lucky rush.

When you’re starting out, just hone your craft. Write every day, concoct stories in your mind and just keep at it. Use professional copywriters, editors and cover artists when you publish your work so that it’s as near perfect as possible. Then, keep writing. The more work you have on the shelves, the more likely you are that one of those novels will hit the big time.

If you weren’t a writer, what career might you have pursued instead?

Geoff: I’d have stayed in TV most probably. Growing up, I always wanted to be David Attenborough, or at least tag along on his field trips. I didn’t even really want to be on TV, I just wanted to be behind the scenes with the crew, traveling the world. I’ve dabbled in the media, both backstage and in front of the camera as a garden expert and have a degree in zoology, so I’d have probably continued down that path. However, writing drew me away, and though I still stick my head into the industry now and then to see what friends are up to, I’m concentrating more on my novels.

Now that the follow up to Inside Evil, Tower of Souls, is out, what can curious fans expect from you next?

Geoff: Quite a few things actually! Along with Inside Evil, I had a science fiction novel stowed away on my computer, and that will publish next month. It’s not your typical lasers, spaceships and aliens though, it’s more of a look at our current fascination with celeb status and the latest craze. Rather than placing a careful eye on climate change and other matters which could be our undoing, people are living beyond their means, and when our lead character gets a chance to enter a cryogenics program and escape the world, he jumps at the chance.

Then, I was rather undecided for NaNoWriMo and I ended up writing a zombie novella. I’ve never wanted to write about zombies, but this story popped into my head. Again, it’s not a classic tale of apocalypse and surviving zombies. It’s more about what happens to the undead when scientists developer a drug to pacify them. How with humans harness these creatures? Are there any remnants of consciousness, or the former people, within the dead shells?

And, of course, the third book of the Inside Evil series is due out March 2013.

Congrats on your upcoming release! We will be looking forward to it.  Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? Would you like to share anything more about your work?

Geoff: I suppose just that you should expect the unexpected in my books. I tend not to read in the same genre that I write in because I don’t want to draw too many ideas from existing novels. I’m always trying to find a new take, and several readers have commented that I’ve offered an original twist on traditional genres. It’s not for everyone of course, and it makes it incredibly hard to try and genre-label my books as they have elements of many different works. Inside Evil could be described as a murder mystery, but it has paranormal and fantasy elements too, and then in the second book there’s a whole new realm to explore with steampunk, fantastical beasts and supernatural threads all being involved.

Sounds like my kinda book! Now for a fun question: if you could face and vanquish any literary (or movie) villain, who would it be?

Geoff: Now it’s time for the inner geek to be unleashed….

hehe. There’s nothing wrong with that!

Geoff: It has to be the Emperor from Star Wars. Yes, I know he’s killed in Return of the Jedi, but did you know that in the expanded universe he actually comes back after using the force to save himself? I LOVE Star Wars, you could say obsessively, so facing Palpatine and being victorious, now that would be pretty darn awesome!

Thanks for being with us today, Geoff. Before you go, where can my readers learn more about you and your work?
