Q and A with paranormal romance author Dylan Newton

For our treat today I’d like to introduce you to a sweet new paranormal romance author. Dylan Newton and I had dinner together this winter and I’ve been looking forward to introducing she and her works to you for some time. She’s just had a new title released and I’m glad to bring you this conversation with her.

Author Dylan Newton

Dylan Newton was born and raised in a small town in Upstate New York where the local library was her favorite hang-out. Despite earning a degree in English Literature, Dylan spent more than a decade sidetracked by an executive position in corporate America before leaving to pursue her true passions: motherhood and writing. Dylan married her high-school sweetheart and they are busy living out their own happily ever after with their two incredible daughters in sunny Florida.

Hi, Dylan! Thanks for being here. Why don’t you tell my readers a little something about your work? What was the inspiration for Any Witch Way?
Dylan Newton: As I am a huge fan of the band, “Godsmack,” whose lead singer is purported to be Wiccan, curiosity compelled me to look into the Wiccan religion. I stumbled across a passage I fell in love with in the religion’s creed (called the Wiccan Rede):
“With a fool no season spend,
Lest ye be counted as his friend.
Merry meet and merry part,
bright the cheeks and warm the heart.”
That passage inspired the first scene where my Wiccan hero and young, troubled heroine first meet, and once I’d begun my research and found a sweet, but deliciously sexy-sounding ritual called the “Five Fold Kiss”…well, I knew I’d have to write this book!

Oh yes. I could see that inspiring many a love scene! 🙂

Do you have any advice for writers just starting out?
Dylan Newton: It’s not magic. You can do this! My first novel, DESPITE THE GHOSTS, was the product of the NaNoWriMo campaign (where you write 50K words in 30 days of November). After finishing the book (ended up at 83K words), I got writer and reader feedback which I used to revise and polish it until it shone. Then, I created a query letter, and sent it to many, many, MANY agents and editors until landing my contract. I can attest to the fact my formula works–because that is exactly how I got my first publishing contract!
It’s really four steps to becoming published:
1. Finish your book.
2. Using writer/reader/agent/editor feedback, revise it to within an inch of its life…or yours.
3. Submit to agents/editors.
4. Repeat steps 2-4 until you get a contract.
And while you’re repeating those steps, keep writing, keep reading, and hang out with other authors and writers. Nobody understands a writer’s plight better than another writer, and you need that support system to keep your dream alive.

If you weren’t a writer, what career might you have pursued instead?

Dylan Newton: This one’s easy, because my first career wasn’t writing—it was running a call center and leading project management teams in a Fortune 500 company! For over a decade, I worked in corporate America, where I’m convinced I contracted testosterone poisoning. Working with all men has its perks—they’re easy to get along with. As long as you can talk football, you’re part of the ‘in’ crowd with men—with women, it’s much more complicated. But I believe working within a practically all-male environment for so long pushed me to more estrogen-rich activities when I left—hence romance novels!

What can curious fans expect from you next?
Dylan: My spicy little paranormal romance ANY WITCH WAY, from The Wild Rose Press, is out in all e-formats now. It’s by far the hottest book I’ve ever written, and quite a bit darker than the others—I love it! Also, I have another novel coming out in 2014 (also with TWRP) called DESPITE THE FANGS featuring a female werewolf with a bad attitude who meets her match with a mysterious hottie who blackmails her into finding his missing son.

Oh dear. Sounds like trouble! Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? Would you like to share anything more about your work?
Dylan: Here is the book trailer and synopsis for my paranormal romance novella, ANY WITCH WAY:

Anywitchway

Any Witch Way by Dylan Newton

Graduate student Lily Andrews resigned herself to a life of perpetual virginity. With her recent twisted appetites and weird fugues hospitalizing every would-be boyfriend, it’s no wonder she uses her coursework as an excuse not to date.
Then, she meets a witch.

Joshua enters Lily’s life to complete penance for a deadly spell he cast centuries ago. Joshua must counter Lily’s demon-wrought fugues with his own Wiccan magick, or lose her forever.

As the pivotal Wiccan holiday, Samhain, approaches, time is running out. Together, they must battle an ancient dark force, fighting for their lives and their new-found love…ANY WITCH WAY they can.

Available at Amazon and The Wild Rose Press.

Indie block party–day two–Keeper of the Grove

Indie-block-party

My current novel is an urban fantasy romance/paranormal romance entitled Keeper of the Grove (Stewards War, book one) . Keeper of the Grove (Stewards War, book one), Juli D. Revezzo, Fantasy romance, urban fantasy, Celtic mythology

Here’s the blurb:

Stacy Macken has one goal in mind: saving her renowned history center from greedy creditors. Losing it would be a catastrophe—one she doesn’t know how she’ll avoid.
Until Aaron Fielding arrives. To all human eyes, he is just like any man, but he reminds Stacy of one of the fae. He certainly enchants her like a fae lover would.
But Stacy suspects there is more to this sexy fellow, with his tales of the Tuatha dé Danann, and magical warriors from Celtic legend who protect humanity from a wicked enemy seeking their destruction. Does his appearance mean the end of the world imminent?

Can she, a studious woman more intent on history books with no training in or love of war, possibly have anything to offer when a long-prophesied druidic battle explodes around her?

Previously published as Passion’s Sacred Dance by Juli D. Revezzo

Bonus: Includes brand new flash fiction piece, “About A Warrior”

It was inspired, believe it or not by a Megadeth song, “Foreclosure of a Dream”. The book went through tons of changes from the time I submitted it, until the day The Wild Rose Press released it last month, minor changes but the core of the story still remained. If you love paranormal romance, and Celtic Mythology, I hope you’ll like it.  It’s available at Amazon only, right now in Kindle Prime (where you can purchase or borrow it if you have a Prime Membership).

There’s also (now) a side  series, Celtic Stewards Chronicles:

Druid Warrior Prince is book one.

Druid Warrior Prince, Celtic Stewards Chronicles 1, Juli D. Revezzo, Celtic fantasy, ebook available on Itunes, Nook, Kobo

Synopsis:

Gwenevieve Macken’s well-ordered world falls into chaos as encroaching interlopers scheme to possess both her and her land. Although she’s been trained to spot the signs of inhuman evil in men, the amassing armies take on guises she never expected.

When a foreign guardian presents himself as her only option for salvation, Gwenevieve must make a choice between her desires, and fulfilling the mythic fate to which she was born. A forced marriage to a Tuatha dé Danann warrior isn’t part of her plan.

And DRUID WARRIOR’S HEART, book two in the Celtic Stewards Chronicles, involving one of Stacy’s ancestors.

DWHcoveridea(1) copySynopsis:

As the latest in her family’s long line of Stewards, Ruth Macken awaits the arrival of a warrior sworn to the Tuatha dé Danaan, the Celtic gods her family has served since the beginning of time. For on that day, a magical battle will erupt. A war between druids and an evil that will decide the fate of mankind.

Isaac Connel knows the battle is imminent, and is ready to fight, once again but from the moment he sees Ruth flitting around the sacred ground, he’s captivated by her fiery charms and a need to protect her.

Despite Isaac’s assurances and the dreams that guide her, what can Ruth and her lover do to drive off this evil? Despite everything, will the world end at the hands of an evil god?

That’s been kind of interesting since there’s a lot of research involved in getting the setting and time period just right.

Celtic Myths and Legends – Guest Author Juli D. Revezzo

A little bit more about my new release, Passion’s Sacred Dance. Wonder where I got the idea?

The new release partying continues.

Okay, yes, I am still doing the Snoopy dance. Speaking of …. This Sweet Saturday Sample comes to you from my brand new release from The Wild Rose Press, Passion’s Sacred Dance, This shows the hero, Aaron, in a little battle to save his charge (soon to be beloved) Stacy. (FYI, Harshad is the name of his army’s special sword-like weapons):

Passion's Sacred Dance by Juli D. Revezzo, paranormal romanceExcerpt:
Aaron planted his stance against the ground like the roots of a great oak tree, and pulled out his harshad. He flipped the handle over in his hand and two flail-like ends emerged. The ends cut through the glass wall, and snaked around the lawyer’s throat like metal ropes, before tightening.

The lawyer’s face began to turn red. Rendered immobile, he stumbled easily as Aaron gave the handle a hard tug. Stacy screeched as she tripped along with him. Aaron stepped through the wall, pried Bradley’s fingers from Stacy’s flesh, and shoved her protectively behind his back.

“Do me a favor,” he ground out between clenched teeth. “Call the number I gave you yesterday. They’ll  do us more good than 9-1-1.”

Stacy turned and ran for the hall as the lawyer  hissed out, “You should learn not to get involved,  unsavory one.”

Aaron swallowed his relief when he heard Stacy slam the door against the wall. He turned his attention back to the cackling lawyer.

“I would give you the same warning, human.” Aaron studied the man in earnest, his voice calm.

“You  have no idea what you’re involved in.”

“I should say the same to you.”

“Oh, I know the depths of their malevolence.” He tugged Bradley’s shirt collar down to reveal the glowing green eye tattooed on his chest. The lawyer’s breathing became more shallow, and sweat trickled from his temple.

“Do you know what you’re dealing with? Think long and hard about which side of the debtors’ line you’ll be on when the battle comes.” He slung the lawyer around, towards the back door. “Tell your masters this ground will carry my brand when all is said and done, or I shall gladly hound them to the ends of their unnatural lives!”

That’s one of my favorite scenes. Aaron’s such a bada** in this one. But he’s got good reason to want to disembowel this fool, don’t you think? Some nerve this guy has, messing with his woman. 😉

Here’s the synopsis:

Unless Stacy Macken can stave off her creditors, she may lose her renowned history center. Yet she knows in her heart that the center is sacred and what a catastrophe losing it would be. How much of a catastrophe, she hasn’t a clue.

Until Aaron Fielding arrives with his tales of magical guardians and the Tuatha dé Danann, sworn warriors from Celtic legend who protect humanity from a wicked enemy seeking their destruction.

Is the end of the world imminent? What can she, a modern woman and her warrior lover, possibly have to offer when a long-prophesied druidic mythic battle explodes around them?

Bonus: Includes brand new flash fiction piece, “About A Warrior”

Passion’s Sacred Dance is available at Amazon.
